If there is no dropped kerb outside your house, a new driveway is useless: you cannot legally drive across the footpath to reach it. Most paving firms lay the drive and leave you to sort the kerb out yourself, which means a second contractor, a second wait, and a second bill.

Machine laid tarmac with a block paved edging course, which is what stops a tarmac drive crumbling away at its edges after a few winters.
Resin bound aggregate laid over a solid base, edged in setts or block. Smooth, permeable and quiet underfoot, with no loose stone to sweep up.
Not every drive needs replacing. Pressure washing, re-jointing with kiln dried sand and relaying sunken areas will often buy an existing drive years.

Choosing block paving from a photograph on a screen is difficult, and the colour of a block in a photograph is rarely the colour of it on your drive. Pat brings samples and the full range to the quote, and will walk you round jobs of ours nearby if you would rather see one at full size before you decide.
A driveway does not fail at the top. It fails because of a decision somebody made on day one, three hundred millimetres down, where nobody was watching.
The existing surface and the soft ground under it are dug out to the depth the job needs and taken off site. Nothing is raked to the side and buried under your new drive.
Geotextile membrane where the ground calls for it, then sub-base stone laid and compacted in layers. One deep tip of stone only ever compacts at the top.
Edge restraints, kerb lines and any crossing go in and are haunched in concrete before the field of paving is laid, so the outer courses cannot creep outwards.
Levels cut so surface water runs to a channel, a gully or a permeable finish, and away from the house and the highway. Worked out at the quote, not at the end.
Blocks laid to the agreed pattern, cut in cleanly at every edge and feature, then vibrated down so the whole surface beds evenly rather than in patches.
Kiln dried sand brushed and vibrated into every joint, the site brushed down, and the finished job walked round with you before the van is loaded.
